Neeman operates a nationwide network of social clubs that provide “rehabilitation maintenance” activities and social activities such as:
Dedicated physical activities
Art and leisure workshops
Cultural activities
Support groups
Field trips
Many stroke victims do not return to the workforce; many are already past retirement age, and their social circle shrinks after the stroke. They might find themselves dealing with severe loneliness that can lead to despair or depression.
Neeman’s social clubs promote stroke patients’ integration into the community and provide support for their spouses, giving the patients hope, new energies, and tools for coping with their new reality. For many, this is their main opportunity to get out of the house, find a framework and form new social relationships. In these clubs, a shared identity is created and special mutual caring relationships are forged. These “peer groups” allow patients to vent about hardships and learn effective ways of handling challenges. Moreover, patients receive information about existing services and help accessing their rights.
The clubs provide a support framework for partners of stroke victims, allowing them to feel a normal sense of belonging. According to participants, the clubs give a great sense of meaning to both patients and their partners.
Some of the clubs are run in collaboration with the welfare system of the local authorities and are usually held in community centers. The clubs operate between one to three days a week, generally from morning to afternoon. Participation fees are subsidized and vary from club to club, depending on the activities and number of operating hours and days.
